During the week of January 3, 2022, through January 9, 2022, Hawai`i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 24 DUI arrests compared with 43 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 44.2 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 18 major accidents so far this year compared with 16 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.5 percent.
To date, there were 2 fatal crashes, resulting in 2 fatalities, compared with 1 fatal crash, resulting in 1 fatality for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes, and 100 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
