17 Motorists Arrested DUI Last Week. Three Resulting from Traffic Accidents

During the week of January 24, 2022, through January 30, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 86 DUI arrests compared with 106 during the same period last year, a decrease of 18.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 61 major accidents so far this year compared with 55 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.9 percent.

To date, there were 4 fatal crashes, resulting in 6 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with 2 fatal crashes, resulting in 2 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 100 percent for fatal crashes, and 200 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
