According to the reporting party. They heard their dogs barking and looked outside to see flames coming from the vacant structure. The structure was later determined to be an unpermitted single-family dwelling wood frame, built on post and pier, with corrugated metal roof, approx 6000 sq ft.
Upon arrival of Hawaiʻi Fire Department. First responders found the vacant single-story dwelling 100% involved in the fire along with a few vehicles on the property. No bystanders were found or reported at the scene. Due to structural collapse being imminent. A defensive strategy was assumed including clearing nearby brush and trees. By 9:55 pm the fire was contained without spread to other structures or nearby brush. However, the roof of the structure as foreseen did collapse in the process.
Hawaiʻi Police Department assisted with a roadblock and scene control. A complete overhaul commenced after the fire was under control and the fire was completely extinguished by 10:30 pm. The scene was then turned over to HPD for investigation.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time pending the investigation’s outcome.
