May is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Month, which shines a national spotlight on the importance of caring for every child’s mental health. It reinforces the idea that positive mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development. To promote open communication about mental health, the HIDOE’s School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) program organized a student art contest. This year’s theme was “Mental Health Talk,” with the aim to raise awareness about mental health resources and to encourage youth and families to connect about mental health.

This year’s winners include:

Olga Frunza Grade 4 Ala Wai Elementary
Layla Cruz Grade 6 Ewa Makai Middle
Marcella Hanlon Grade 9 Kalāheo High
Duvauchelle Olapaholunape Grade 10 Molokaʻi High
