High Surf Warning Issued for West Facing Shores of Hawai‘i Island

HILO — The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Warning for the west-facing shores of the North Kohala, North Kona, South Kohala, and South Kona districts of Hawai‘i Island. The warning is in effect through Thursday night, cautioning residents and visitors about hazardous ocean conditions.

The High Surf Warning indicates the presence of large breaking waves, significant shore break, and dangerous currents that pose a risk of injury or death. In response to these conditions, local authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution.

Safety Measures and Beach Closures

Ocean Safety Personnel advise those in the affected areas to heed all instructions and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others. As a result of the warning, the following beaches have been closed:

  • Kahalu‘u Beach Park
  • Kohanaiki Beach Park
  • Mahukona Beach Park

Additional beach closures may occur without prior notice as conditions evolve. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed and avoid entering the water until the warning is lifted.
