Paʻauilo, Hawaiʻi – A fast-moving brush fire near the 37-mile marker in Paʻauilo has been brought under control after burning an estimated 150 acres. Multiple units from the Hawaiʻi Fire Department (HFD) and the Hawaiʻi Police Department (HPD) were dispatched to the scene, where the fire was moving quickly toward the highway due to windy conditions.
Upon arrival, HFD crews found the brush fire to be about five acres in size but growing rapidly. HFD helicopters were immediately deployed to perform bucket drops, and several dozers were brought in to control the head of the fire. HFD engines, tankers, and brush trucks were used to control both flanks of the fire.
The fire was estimated to be 150 acres at the time it was brought under control, with heavy smoke pushing toward the highway. No structures were lost in the fire.
HFD units remained on the scene throughout the night to monitor conditions and ensure no flare-ups occurred outside of the burn area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
