Data on Decreased Immune Response Among Immunocompromised People People who are moderately to severely immunocompromised make up about 3% of the adult population and are especially vulnerable to COVID-19 because they are more at risk of serious, prolonged illness.
Studies indicate some immunocompromised people don’t always build the same level of immunity after vaccination the way non-immunocompromised people do, and may benefit from an additional dose to ensure adequate protection against COVID-19.

Who Needs an Additional COVID-19 Vaccine? Currently, CDC is recommending that moderately to severely immunocompromised people receive an additional dose. This includes people who have:
- Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
- Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Aug. 12 authorized the extra dose of the Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccine for those with severely weakened immune systems to better protect them as the delta variant continues to spread.
At this time there is no recommendation for those who took the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
