CIVIL DEFENSE ISSUES TSUNAMI WARNING FOR HAWAII ISLAND; EVACUATION DEADLINE SET FOR 6:15 PM

Hilo, Hawaiʻi – Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense has issued a TSUNAMI WARNING for the Island and State of Hawaiʻi due to a destructive tsunami generated by an 8.7 magnitude earthquake off the Coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

All residents in the Tsunami Evacuation Zone are instructed to complete their evacuation by 6:15 p.m. today, Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The estimated time of arrival of the first tsunami wave is 7:17 p.m. HST.

The following locations have been opened as Public Evacuation Shelters on Hawaiʻi Island:

  • Puʻueo Community Center
  • Panaewa Park
  • Keaʻau Armory
  • Pahoa Community Center
  • Kaʻū District Gym
  • Nāʻālehu Community Center
  • Yano Hall
  • Kealakehe H.S. Gym
  • Waimea Community Center
  • Hisaoka Gym
  • Honokaʻa Gym

The Civil Defense message reiterates that a Tsunami Warning means an earthquake has occurred that has generated a destructive tsunami. Residents are urged to follow all official instructions and take immediate action to protect lives and property.
