Pāhala, Nāʻālehu – The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has scheduled a community informational meeting to update residents on the progress of closing large capacity cesspools in Pāhala and Nāʻālehu. These closures are part of a federal consent decree to protect local groundwater and nearshore marine environments.

The semi-annual meeting is a key opportunity for the community to hear about the ongoing project, which aims to replace the decades-old cesspools with a centralized wastewater treatment system. The federally mandated project is being overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Nāʻālehu Community Center, located at 95-5635 Mamalahoa Highway in Nāʻālehu.

For those unable to attend in person, an online option is available via Zoom at the following link: https://www.zoomgov.com/j/1618563647

Questions and comments for the department can be sent in advance to cohdem@hawaiicounty.gov.
