The Department of Water Supply (DWS) has issued an “Essential Needs Only” water notice for all customers in North Kohala, effective immediately and until further notice. This notice requires residents to restrict all water use to essential purposes, such as drinking, cooking, and hygiene, to prevent water storage tanks from running out.

The affected areas span from Hāwī to Halaʻula, including Puakéa Bay, Kaʻauhuhu Homesteads, ʻĀinakea Village Subdivision, and all customers along Akoni Pule Highway, Mill Road, and Maʻulili Road.

The urgent notice is a result of a critical situation where only one well, Hāwī #1, remains operational. High water usage is leading to low water pressure or a complete lack of water for some customers.

In response, the DWS has taken the following emergency actions:

  • Emergency repairs have been authorized for Hāwī #2 well, with a contractor anticipated to begin work as soon as today.
  • Repairs for the Hāwī #2 well are tentatively scheduled for completion by mid-to-late next week.
  • Private water hauling trucks have been contracted to supplement water levels in the North Kohala water tanks.
  • A public water tanker has been stationed at the intersection of Hāwī Road and Kohala Mountain Road for residents’ use.

The DWS thanks affected customers for their understanding and kōkua. For more information, residents can visit the DWS website at www.hawaiidws.org or call (808) 961-8050 during normal business hours. For after-hours emergencies, please call (808) 961-8790.
