Kona, Hawaiʻi – The popular “Food Truck Friday” event in Kona is being temporarily relocated to the Old Kona Airport Beach Park. The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Parks & Recreation has granted permission for this move as part of a limited pilot program.

The event, hosted by Sugar’s Hawaiʻi – BBQ and Desserts, will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. every other Friday, starting July 18 and running through September 26. Vendors will set up in the South Runway area of the park. Previously, the event was located outside Target.

Mayor Kimo Alameda commented on the decision, stating, “Upon learning that the food trucks in Kona lost their location due to unforeseen circumstances, we stepped in to offer a temporary solution.” He added, “We recognize that for many of these food truck vendors, this is their primary source of income, and we are committed to creating viable alternatives to support this community event.”

The Department of Parks and Recreation developed this temporary plan after careful review and consideration. The pilot program at the Old Kona Airport will also assist in identifying a long-term venue for the event once the pilot concludes.

Parks & Recreation Director Clayton Honma emphasized the community aspect: “These Food Truck Friday events allow families and friends to gather, strengthen social connections, and support local food and craft vendors.” He also thanked Catie Anderson at Sugar’s Hawaiʻi, saying she “worked tirelessly to make this happen so that the community can continue enjoying this popular gathering.”

Catie Anderson expressed gratitude to the County for its assistance. “Food Truck Friday started as just a small market with a handful of vendors, but over the course of five years, it has grown and turned into the biggest weekly event in Kona,” Anderson said. “This event is special. When you support one of our vendors, you are keeping their dreams alive. It has not only become a staple in our community, but it has also provided jobs for over 20 families on the Big Island. We are eternally grateful for the support of our community, Hawaiʻi County, and our Mayor.”
