Fourteen Motorists Arrested for DUI. Three Resulting from Traffic Accidents

During the week of October 11, 2021, through October 17, 2021, Hawai`i Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 840 DUI arrests compared with 770 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.1 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 639 major accidents so far this year compared with 612 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.4 percent. 

As of Oct. 17th, there were 20 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities, compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 53.8 percent for fatal crashes and 53.8 percent for fatalities.  The motorcyclist fatality that occurred last night in Hilo will be reflected in next week’s update.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
