HILO, Hawaiʻi – A 39-year-old wanted male fugitive, Nathan Cakin of Ocean View, was taken into police custody without incident this afternoon following an hours-long barricaded standoff in Ocean View. Cakin was arrested for an outstanding warrant and additional firearm-related offenses.

At approximately 9:45 a.m. on Monday, June 23, Hawaiʻi Island police, working in coordination with federal and state law enforcement partners including the Hawaiʻi Department of Law Enforcement, U.S. Marshals Service, and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), conducted checks at a residence on Aloha Boulevard in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision. Cakin was sought on a $50,000 outstanding warrant for first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and was also known to be in possession of a firearm.

Upon arrival at the residence, officers made contact with Cakin. Two women also present at the scene confirmed the presence of a firearm inside the home.

Cakin refused officers’ verbal commands to exit the residence and subsequently barricaded himself inside, making threats to harm himself and stating that officers would have to shoot him.

Crisis negotiators attempted to engage with Cakin, but he continued to refuse to surrender. The Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Special Response Team (SRT) was activated and responded to the scene. Around 3:45 p.m., tactical measures were deployed, leading to Cakin’s surrender and arrest without further incident.

Cakin is currently being held at the Kealakehe Police Station as police continue their investigation.

Detectives with the Area II Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant at the residence, recovering a rifle and methamphetamine-related paraphernalia.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is encouraged to contact Detective Donovan Kohara at (808) 960-3118 or via email at donovan.kohara@hawaiicounty.gov.
