Hilo, HI – The Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area will temporarily close its gates on Tuesday, February 4, from 4 a.m. to 12 p.m. to facilitate treatment for the invasive little fire ant (LFA).

Residents and visitors are advised to plan their travel accordingly as the closure will prevent access to public restrooms and amenities within the park during these hours.

The treatment is part of ongoing efforts by the County of Hawaiʻi’s Department of Parks & Recreation to manage and eradicate this pest, which poses a threat to both local ecology and public enjoyment of the area.

The Department extends its gratitude to the community for their understanding and cooperation during this necessary maintenance work.

For further inquiries regarding the treatment or the temporary closure, residents can contact the Park Maintenance Vector Control Supervisor at (808) 961-8719.
