Hawaii – The Hawaiʻi Army National Guard (HIARNG) has issued an alert to Hawaiʻi Island residents regarding upcoming convoy operations as they prepare for annual training exercises in June.
From May 18th to May 30th, 2025, HIARNG will be conducting multiple 10-vehicle convoys transporting vehicles and equipment from Kawaihae Harbor in Kona to the Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA). The convoys will be operating between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily during this period.
The planned route for the convoys from Kawaihae Harbor will take them south on Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, then onto Waikoloa Road, followed by Māmalahoa Highway, Daniel K. Inouye Highway (formerly Saddle Road), and finally to Pōhakuloa Training Area. The military vehicles, which will include trailers, will endeavor to utilize the far-right lane on all roadways whenever feasible.
The HIARNG is advising motorists to be aware of an increased presence of military vehicles along these routes and to anticipate potentially slower speeds. This movement is in preparation for annual training exercises scheduled to take place in mid-June. Following the completion of the training, the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard will conduct similar convoy operations to return the vehicles from Pōhakuloa Training Area back to Kawaihae Harbor.
