HONOLULU – Hawaiʻi’s public libraries are ready to welcome summer with the launch of their 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, “Mele,” a statewide celebration of poetry, chants, music, and stories designed to connect communities. Running from June 1 to July 31, the initiative invites readers of all ages to participate, echoing the call to “E Heluhelu Kākou — Let’s Read Together!”
Participants in the “Mele” Summer Reading Challenge have the chance to earn a variety of exciting rewards, including McDonald’s snack cards, stickers, tote bags, and books. Those who achieve specific reading milestones will also be entered into a grand prize drawing for four round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines, offering a significant incentive for dedicated readers. Registration for the challenge is convenient, available both at local libraries and online via the summer reading webpage.
This year’s Summer Reading Challenge also coincides with the unveiling of a vibrant new look for the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System (HSPLS). Inspired by local culture and community, the colorful new design is prominently featured on new, eco-friendly library cards. The design cleverly integrates traditional geometric patterns found in Hawaiian kapa, artwork, and tattoos, collectively forming the letter “H” to represent the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System.
In a move towards greater environmental stewardship, the new library cards are biodegradable, aligning with efforts to protect Hawaii’s cherished natural environment. Existing cardholders are encouraged to visit their local library to trade in their old cards for the new design at no cost. The fresh aesthetic serves as a visual invitation, symbolizing how the libraries have evolved to meet the changing needs of their communities.
Residents are encouraged to visit their local library this summer to get a free new library card, track their reading, and participate in the “Mele” challenge for a chance to win amazing prizes. More information about the library’s new look can be found on their FAQ page.
