HILO, HI – The Hawai’i County Council unanimously (8-0) passed Bill No. 35 on its first reading during their meeting on April 2, 2025, paving the way for crucial funds to be allocated towards substance abuse prevention coordination efforts across the island. The bill amends Ordinance No. 24-32, the existing operating budget for the County of Hawai’i for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.
Bill 35 specifically appropriates $7,100 of incoming revenues from the State Grants – State Substance Abuse Prevention Coordination Grant account. These funds will then be directly allocated back into the same account, ensuring that the earmarked money is readily available for its intended purpose.
The vote breakdown saw strong support from Council Members Galimba, Hustace, Kagiwada, Kaneali’i-Kleinfelder, Kimball, Onishi, and Villegas, along with Chair Inaba. Council Member Kierkiewicz was absent from the meeting. No council members voted against the bill.
The bill will now proceed to further readings and consideration before final approval. However, given the unanimous support during the first reading, it is widely expected to pass..
