HONOLULU — The Hawai’i Department of Health (DOH) is warning residents about a voluntary recall of Mauna Loa Dark Chocolate Covered Macadamias, initiated by the manufacturer, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company, LLC. The recall stems from the potential presence of undeclared almonds and cashews, which could trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

The affected products were distributed to retail stores across Hawai’i and come in 0.6-ounce and 4-ounce bags. According to the DOH’s Food and Drug Branch (FDB), the 0.6-ounce bags have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 0 72992 05464 4, with lot numbers K5069C1 or K5069C2, and a “best by” date of October 2026. The 4-ounce bags feature a UPC of 0 72992 05556 6, with lot numbers B4339E1 or B4340E1, and a “best by” date of July 2026. The FDB is actively working with local retailers to remove these items from shelves.

Individuals with allergies or severe sensitivities to almonds and cashews face a risk of serious health complications if they consume the product. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include a runny nose, skin issues like hives or swelling, itching or tingling in the mouth and throat, digestive problems such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting, and respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath.

In more severe cases, exposure could lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition that restricts airways and impairs breathing. Signs of anaphylaxis include throat swelling, a sharp drop in blood pressure, rapid heart rate, chest pain, difficulty breathing, trouble swallowing, pale or bluish skin, dizziness, or fainting. The DOH emphasizes that anyone with a known allergy who may have consumed or been exposed to the product should contact their healthcare provider immediately. In the event of anaphylaxis, individuals should use an epinephrine autoinjector (such as EpiPen or Auvi-Q) and call 911 without delay.

Fortunately, no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported in connection with this recall as of the announcement. The DOH urges consumers to carefully check their pantry for the recalled products using the UPC, lot numbers, and “best by” dates. Those with tree nut allergies in their household should not open or consume the items to avoid exposure. Affected products can be returned to the point of purchase for a full refund. For further assistance, consumers can reach Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Company, LLC at 1-888-255-5998, available Monday through Friday.

This recall underscores the importance of accurate food labeling, especially for products containing common allergens. The DOH continues to monitor the situation and collaborate with the manufacturer to ensure public safety.
