Hawaii Fire Department Responds to Two Fires on the Same Road

Around 5:26 am this morning Hawaii Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a car on fire on Kamaili Road in the lower Puna district.

Upon arrival, HFD found a single passenger vehicle fully engulfed in flames. As HFD was about to begin extinguishing operations, another fire, this time a structure fire was reported about 200 feet away. HFD halted operations to move units to the structure fire. Additional units were dispatched and HFD arrived to find a 30ft x 30ft unpermitted structure fully engulfed in flames.  

With no occupants or bystanders in the area. Hawaii Police Department closed Kamaili Road diverting traffic to Kapoho- Kalapana road for approximately 1-hour.  The fire was extinguished, overhaul completed with no occupants found in the structure, and the scene was turned over to HPD. 

HFD then returned to the initial incident and extinguished the vehicle fire. The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
