HILO, Hawai’i Island – The Department of Water Supply (DWS), County of Hawai‘i, is joining the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in celebrating annual Fix a Leak Week, running from March 17th to 21st. To promote water conservation, DWS will be holding public outreach events in Hilo and Kona, providing residents with the tools and knowledge to identify and repair common household water leaks.
These events will offer valuable resources including FREE toilet tank leak detection tablets, expert conservation advice, and an opportunity to test your drinking water knowledge for a chance to win prizes.
Here are the dates and locations:
- Monday, March 17th, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hawai‘i County Building, 25 Aupuni Street, Hilo
- Wednesday, March 19th, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center, Building C, lower level, 74-5044 Ane Keohokālole Highway, Kailua-Kona
- Friday, March 21st, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Aupuni Center, 101 Pauahi Street, Hilo
Beyond these outreach events, DWS will also be offering toilet tank leak detection tablets at their offices in Hilo, Kona, and Waimea during normal business hours, while supplies last. These tablets provide a simple and effective way to detect toilet leaks, which can waste up to 200 gallons of water daily and significantly increase water bills. Often caused by worn-out flappers, these leaks can easily go unnoticed. Replacing a faulty flapper is a cost-effective and simple solution to reduce water waste.
DWS encourages customers to proactively check for other household leaks. To do so, turn off all faucets, spigots, and water-using appliances, then check the water meter. If the meter is still moving, a leak is likely present. Reviewing your water bill for any unexplained spikes in water usage can also indicate an undetected leak.
