During the week of January 1, 2021, through January 3, 2021, Hawai’i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 19 DUI arrests compared with 7 during the same period last year. This is an increase of 171.4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 5 major accidents so far this year compared with 13 during the same period last year, a decrease of 61.5 percent.
To date, there were 0 fatal crashes, resulting in 0 fatalities, compared with 1 fatal crash, resulting in 1 fatality for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 100 percent for fatal crashes, and 100 percent for fatalities.
