Hawai‘i Police Department Recruits Receive Comprehensive Legal Training

HILO — The Hawai‘i Police Department’s 102nd Recruit Class is currently undergoing comprehensive legal training as part of their preparation for active duty. The training, provided by the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, covers a wide array of legal topics essential for law enforcement officers.

On Monday, Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen led a session focused on the role and responsibilities of the Prosecuting Attorney. The presentation included an overview of the Office’s structure, key concepts in criminal procedure, insights into current crime trends, and an update on the state of the criminal justice system.

Two-Week Training Program

Over the next two weeks, the recruits will receive in-depth instruction from deputy prosecuting attorneys, victim assistance staff, criminal investigators, and crime prevention experts. The training will cover a broad range of topics, including:

  • Criminal Procedure and Constitutional Law: Key principles and legal frameworks that guide law enforcement actions.
  • Search and Seizure: Understanding legal boundaries and protocols for conducting searches.
  • Crimes Against Persons: Including domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.
  • Property Crime and Narcotics: Addressing theft, drug-related offenses, and associated legal processes.
  • Electronic Enticement and Internet Crimes Against Children: Focused on the growing threats in the digital age.
  • Search Warrants and Impaired Driving: Procedures for obtaining warrants and handling cases involving impaired drivers.
  • Offenses Against Public Order and Forfeitures: Legal aspects of maintaining public order and asset forfeiture.
  • Victim Services and Crime Prevention: Emphasizing support for victims and proactive measures to prevent crime.

This comprehensive training aims to equip recruits with the legal knowledge necessary to perform their duties effectively and uphold the law.
