KAILUA-KONA, Hawaiʻi – Hawaiian Electric crews are set to complete their extensive overnight pole replacement project in Kona over the next two nights, impacting traffic along Māmalahoa Highway and Palani Road. These final segments of work are part of a series of upgrades performed throughout May.
Tomorrow night, Thursday, May 29, 2025, work will require a road closure on Māmalahoa Highway between Nohealani Street and Donkey Mill Road. This closure will be in effect from approximately 10:00 p.m. tomorrow evening until 4:00 a.m. on Friday, May 30.
Separately, another phase of work will occur the following night, Friday, May 30, 2025, impacting Palani Road between Hao Kuni Street and Pamahoa Place. This specific closure will also run from 10:00 p.m. on May 30 until 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 31.
These pole replacements and upgrades are part of Hawaiian Electric’s broader Wildfire Safety Strategy, aimed at strengthening the electrical grid and reducing fire hazards.
Motorists are strongly advised to utilize alternate routes during the closure hours on both nights. Flagmen will be present on-site to direct traffic, and all drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching the work zones.
While most of the work focuses on infrastructure improvements, Hawaiian Electric has indicated that some segments may necessitate temporary power outages. Customers directly impacted by any planned outages would have been notified in advance by the company.
