Hawaiʻi County Planning Department Accepts July Variance Applications

Hawaiʻi Island – The Hawaiʻi County Planning Department has announced that it has accepted three new applications for variances on properties in South Kohala, Puna, and South Hilo. Public comments are being accepted, and the Planning Director is expected to take action on the applications in September 2025.

Here is a breakdown of the applications:

  • Megumi Nagaya (South Kohala): This is a zoning variance for a property on Kāwaihae Road, seeking to be released from minimum yard and open space requirements. The deadline for public comments is August 30, 2025, with a tentative decision date of September 14, 2025.
  • Michael F. & Alexander Breslow, & Tamarie Anne Prewitt (Puna): This application is for a subdivision variance on an 81.944-acre property on North Road, seeking an exception to the water supply requirement. The deadline for public comments is August 22, 2025, and a tentative decision date is set for September 22, 2025.
  • Hamakua Orchards II LLC (South Hilo): This is a subdivision variance for a 128.59-acre property in the Pūʻēʻo Farm Lots, also seeking an exception to the water supply requirement. The deadline for public comments is August 18, 2025, with a tentative decision date of September 15, 2025.

Maps and documents related to these applications are on file and open for public inspection at the Hawaiʻi County Planning Department offices in Hilo and Kailua-Kona during business hours.
