HONOLULU, HI – The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is advising travelers to plan ahead and allow for extra time at airports statewide during the upcoming Easter weekend and the 62nd annual Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. The week-long cultural celebration, commencing on Easter Sunday, April 20th, and culminating on Saturday, April 26th, is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Hawai‘i Island, potentially leading to increased airport congestion and parking limitations at Hawai‘i’s five busiest airports.

With the influx of visitors anticipated for the Merrie Monarch Festival, Hilo International Airport (ITO) is bracing for a surge in travelers. HDOT has been collaborating with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to ensure a smooth and efficient experience for passengers. These preparations include:

  • Technical Support: Technicians will be readily available to address any potential technical issues with screening equipment.
  • Increased Staffing: Additional personnel will be deployed to expedite passenger screening processes.
  • Canine Units: As needed, canine units will be utilized to enhance baggage screening procedures.

To mitigate potential travel headaches, HDOT offers the following recommendations for air travelers during this busy period, regardless of their destination:

  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your scheduled flight departure. This will provide ample time for parking, check-in, and security screening.
  • Check Flight Status: Confirm your flight’s status with your airline, including any potential delays, gate assignments, and baggage claim information if you are picking up arriving passengers.
  • Consider Alternative Transportation: Explore options such as ride-sharing services or being dropped off at the airport to avoid the potential for parking delays, as parking stalls tend to fill up quickly during holidays and special events.
  • Parking Information: If utilizing airport public parking garages, arrive early and be prepared for a longer walk to the ticket lobbies, as some lots are located farther from the main terminal. The maximum parking rate for a 24-hour period is $24 at all five of Hawai‘i’s busiest airports.

By following these guidelines, travelers can help ensure a smoother and less stressful travel experience during the busy Easter weekend and Merrie Monarch Festival festivities. HDOT encourages everyone to plan ahead and be prepared for potential delays.
