Hilo, Hawai‘i Island, January 14, 2025 – The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) has issued a high bacteria count notification for Honoli‘i Cove after routine water quality monitoring revealed elevated bacteria levels of 238 per 100 mL, exceeding the acceptable threshold.

The source of the elevated bacteria levels is currently undetermined. The DOH emphasized that Honoli‘i Cove has historically met water quality standards and no known sources of fecal contamination have been identified.

Due to uncertainty about the accuracy of the initial sample, the DOH has collected additional samples for retesting. The department advises the public to exercise caution and stay informed as they await updated results.

Beachgoers are encouraged to check for updates from the DOH before visiting Honoli‘i Cove to ensure water safety.
