Hilo, Hawai‘i Island, January 14, 2025 – The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) has issued a high bacteria count notification for Richardson Ocean Center following routine water quality testing. Elevated bacteria levels of 254 per 100 mL were detected, surpassing the acceptable threshold.

The cause of the elevated bacteria levels remains undetermined. The DOH has noted that the beach typically meets water quality standards and that no known sources of fecal contamination have been identified.

Due to uncertainty about the initial sample’s accuracy, the DOH has collected additional samples for further testing. The department advises the public to be cautious and stay updated as new test results become available. The notification will be updated based on the results of the ongoing retesting.

Beachgoers are encouraged to check for updates from the DOH to ensure safety before visiting Richardson Ocean Center.
