The National Weather Service has extended the High Surf Warning for the west-facing shores of Hawaii Island, covering the districts of Kaʻū, North Kohala, North Kona, South Kohala, and South Kona, through Saturday morning.
This warning signals the presence of large breaking surf, significant shore break, and dangerous currents, posing risks of serious injury or death to anyone entering the water or venturing too close to the shoreline.
Authorities urge the public to:
- Follow instructions from Ocean Safety Personnel.
- Take necessary precautions if you are near the west-facing shores.
As a precautionary measure, several popular beach parks are closed until further notice:
- Kahaluʻu Beach Park
- Magic Sands/Laʻaloa Beach Park
- Mahukona Beach Park
