The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Surf Warning for west-facing shores and a High Surf Advisory for north and east-facing shores of Hawaii Island, in effect through Monday night.

Hazardous Conditions

The High Surf Warning indicates the presence of large breaking waves, significant shore break, and dangerous currents that pose a serious risk of injury or even death. The NWS advises extreme caution for anyone near the affected coastlines.

Closures and Restrictions

Several beaches have been closed to ensure public safety. The following locations are off-limits, with no ocean entry allowed:

  • Kahaluʻu Beach Park
  • Onekahakaha Beach Park
  • Kealoha Beach Park
  • Leleiwi Beach Park
  • Laʻaloa Beach Park

These closures will remain in effect through Sunday due to an anticipated larger swell. Additional closures may occur without prior notice.

Safety Advisory

Residents and visitors are urged to:

  • Follow instructions from Ocean Safety Personnel.
  • Avoid entering the ocean in affected areas.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your property if located along exposed shorelines.

Stay Updated

Conditions are subject to change rapidly. Officials will provide updates as needed. For the latest information, monitor local advisories and follow guidance from the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.
