KA’U, HI – A section of Highway 11 (Volcano Rd) in Ka’u is currently closed near the Namakanipaio Campgrounds (Volcano County Club) between mile markers 31 and 32 due to ongoing police activity. The Hawaii Police Department (HPD) confirmed the closure and is advising motorists to seek alternative routes.

Reports indicate the incident began with a suspect fleeing on foot. Subsequently, shots were reportedly fired, and a trauma unit was activated. A person sustained a gunshot injury, though details surrounding the circumstances are still emerging.

According to preliminary information, authorities have recovered a firearm at the scene. However, it remains unclear whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted or resulted from police action.

The HPD has not yet released the identity of the suspect involved. No further details regarding the suspect’s condition or the nature of the original incident that prompted the police response have been disclosed.

The Hawaii Police Department is expected to release an official media statement later. This article will be updated as more information becomes available. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and monitor local news outlets for updates on the road closure.
