Hilo Man Charged with Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member

Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Hilo man, 21 year-old Shaycen Sabino, was charged with abuse of a family household member in relation to incidents occurring on April 2, 2022 and April 4, 2022 at a Banyan Drive apartment.


As the Complaint alleges, Sabino was charged with four (4) offenses including Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member (physically abuse a family or household member by impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood by applying pressure on the throat or neck), Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member (physically abuse a family or household member in the presence of a minor under the age of fourteen years old), and two counts of misdemeanor Abuse of a Family or Household Member. Both variations of Felony Abuse of a Family or Household Member offenses are class C felony offenses punishable by a maximum penalty of five (5) years in prison.


Sabino is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Hilo Family Court on Thursday. He remains in custody in lieu of $24,000.00 bail.


The investigation was initiated by Officer Roland Kuamo‘o, South Hilo Patrol, and the felony investigation was handled by Officer Corey Kaneko and Detective Gavin Kagimoto, Area I Juvenile Aid Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Suzanna Tiapula.


The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
