Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that 32 year-old Logan Arruda-Lorenzo was charged in relation to two incidents, the theft of a Ford van from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo that occurred on June 16, 2023 and the theft of a Milwaukee brand rolling toolbox and contents from a residence on S. Wilder Road which took place on April 28, 2023.
Arruda-Lorenzo is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Hilo Circuit Court on the van theft on Tuesday afternoon. His bail is currently set at $75,000.00.
Arruda-Lorenzo appeared in Hilo Circuit Court on Friday afternoon for the tool theft charges. His bail was maintained at $10,000.00.
As the first Complaint alleges, Arruda-Lorenzo was charged with Theft in the First Degree (theft of a motor vehicle, a Ford van) and Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle in the First Degree. As the second Complaint alleges Arruda-Lorenzo was charged with Theft in the Second Degree.
Theft in the First Degree is a class B felony offense which carries a penalty of a either a ten-year prison term or four-years probation and up to eighteen months in jail. Theft in the Second Degree is a class C felony offense and carries a penalty of either a five-year prison term or four-years probation and up to twelve months in jail.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The cases were initiated by South Hilo Patrol and the felony investigation was led by the Crime Reduction Unit, Area I Criminal Investigation Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Soong.
