
KONA, HI – Duncan Mahi, 54, of Hilo, was sentenced to 30 years in prison on December 31, 2024, following a plea agreement for the sexual assault and kidnapping of two minors. The charges stem from incidents that took place on September 16, 2022.
Mahi appeared in Kona Circuit Court and entered “No Contest” pleas to charges of Sexual Assault in the First Degree and two counts of Kidnapping. He had been held without bail throughout the proceedings.
Mahi pleaded “No Contest” to:
- Kidnapping (class A felony) with a mandatory minimum of thirteen years and four months.
- Kidnapping (class B felony) with a mandatory minimum of six years and eight months.
- Sexual Assault in the First Degree (class A felony) with a mandatory minimum of thirteen years and four months.
The court ordered that the sentences for the first count of Kidnapping and Sexual Assault be served concurrently to each other, but consecutively to the second count of Kidnapping, resulting in a combined total of thirty years with a twenty-year mandatory minimum.
Sexual Assault in the First Degree, a class A felony, carries a maximum penalty of a twenty-year prison term. Kidnapping can be classified as either a class A or B felony, depending on the specific facts and circumstances of the case. Class B felony offenses carry a maximum penalty of a ten-year prison term.
The investigation was initiated by South Kohala Patrol, and the felony investigation was spearheaded by Detective Steven Grace of the Area II Criminal Investigation Section, with assistance from members of the Area I and Area II Criminal Investigation Divisions of the Hawai‘i Police Department. Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Kate Perazich and Kaua Jackson prosecuted the case.
