Pedestrian Struck in Hilo Collision Succumbs to Injuries; Investigation Reclassified to Negligent Homicide

HILO, Hawaiʻi – Hawaiʻi Island police report that Terry Lytle, a 60-year-old Ocean View man, has died from injuries he sustained after being struck by a van near the intersection of Kinoʻole Street and Ponahawai Street in Hilo on Wednesday morning, June 18, 2025.

The collision occurred at approximately 10:10 a.m. Hilo patrol officers determined that a 2001 Ford E250 van, operated by a 39-year-old Hilo man, was traveling southbound on Kinoʻole Street when Lytle walked into eastbound traffic, outside of a marked crosswalk. The van struck Lytle, causing him to sustain life-threatening injuries. He was immediately transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Lytle tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:05 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

The operator of the van was not injured and was not arrested as a result of the collision.

The East Hawaiʻi Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation. At this time, police do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash.

In light of Lytle’s death, police have reclassified the investigation from negligent injury to negligent homicide. This marks the 14th traffic fatality on Hawaiʻi Island in 2025, compared to 18 traffic fatalities at the same time last year.
