HONOLULU – Travelers departing from Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) can now view real-time security checkpoint status and estimated wait times on electronic displays in Terminal 1 (formerly the Interisland Terminal). The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced today, June 13, 2025, that this new feature aims to improve efficiency and passenger experience.
The displayed wait times are generated using advanced Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology, providing accurate estimates for passengers.
HDOT plans to extend this convenience to Terminal 2 (formerly the Overseas Terminal) following the completion of significant improvements to Checkpoint 3. These enhancements, which include new air conditioning, ceiling renovations, and updated lighting, are expected to be completed in late 2026. The extended timeline is due to the complex coordination required to maintain checkpoint operations throughout the construction period.
The total cost for implementing the LiDAR technology and the necessary communications infrastructure for displays in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 checkpoints is $6 million.
