The hearing was handled by Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Charles Murray and Ka‘uanoe Jackson who presented evidence through testimony by several police detectives and Asagra’s assigned felony probation officer. Based on the arguments of counsel, the testimony of the witnesses, and the records and files of the case, Judge Kim ordered that Asagra be held without bail. He was taken into custody and remains at the Hawai’i Community Correctional Center. Asagra also appeared for his arraignment where he entered pleas of “Not Guilty” and requested a jury trial which was scheduled for October.

As the Complaint alleges, Asagra, who has four prior felony convictions, was charged with Murder in the Second Degree for causing the death of Joey Richmond and Arson in the First Degree for setting fire to a BMW motor vehicle. Prosecutors further alleged that Defendant is a persistent offender, based on his prior felony convictions, and if convicted as charged of the Murder in the Second Degree offense, may be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

“We are pleased with the Court’s decision in granting the State’s motion. We have serious concerns for the public’s safety given the seriousness of the charged offenses and Defendant’s alleged ongoing criminal activity and believe that he is a flight risk given his financial resources,” said Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen. “Earlier this week, Asagra posted bonds in the amounts of $550,000.00, $500,000.00, $72,025.00, and $10,000.00.”
