Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Kapa‘au man, 28-year-old Thomas Michael McCormick was arrested and charged with identity theft, forgery, and felony theft-related offenses in connection with fraudulent check transactions which occurred between May 26, 2022, and June 13, 2022, in Kona.
As the Complaint alleges, McCormick, was charged with fourteen (14) offenses including four (4) counts each of Identity Theft in the Second Degree, Forgery in the Second Degree, and Theft in the Second Degree, and two (2) counts of Unauthorized Possession of Confidential Personal Information. The most serious offense, Identity Theft in the Second Degree, is a class B felony offense punishable by a maximum penalty of ten (10) years in prison.
McCormick is scheduled to make his initial appearance on Wednesday afternoon in Kona District Court. He remains in custody in lieu of $190,000.00 bail.
The case was handled by Officers Joshua Stender and Bailey Langsner, Kona Patrol, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Chase Murray.
The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
