At 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 03, 2021, a 46-year-old man reported that an unknown man took his truck by gunpoint in Pāhala. As Ka‘u patrol officers were responding to the call, they located the truck on Highway 11 near Whittington Beach Park.
The driver, later identified as 31-year-old Grant Dacalio of Ka‘u, did not comply with directions to pull over and sped off. A short time later, police dispatch received a 911 call about an unknown disturbance at a residence in that general area. Arriving officers saw Dacalio dragging an 80-year-old woman into a residence. It was determined that Dacalio arrived at the residence and threatened the homeowner with a knife. After a short standoff, Dacalio surrendered to police without further incident.
After conferring with prosecutors on Friday, March 5, detectives charged Dacalio with three counts of first degree terroristic threating, two counts of kidnapping, one count of first degree robbery, one count of first degree burglary, one count of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, and one count of third degree assault. He is being held at the police cellblock in lieu of bail set at $216,000. It was also determined that Dacalio is wanted for parole violations in Idaho.
