Ocean View, Hawai’i – In a ceremony held at an Ocean View restaurant on May 2nd, Patrol Officer Paul Wright III was honored with the first-ever Ka‘ū District “Officer of the Quarter” award for the first quarter of 2025. The award recognizes Wright’s exceptional service and dedication to the community.
Wright, an 11-year veteran of law enforcement, has served the Ka‘ū community since May 2022. Although currently residing in Hilo, his family roots are firmly planted in Ka‘ū, underscoring his personal connection to the area he protects.
A key factor in Wright’s selection was his instrumental role in the apprehension of a wanted male fugitive who had evaded police for six years. Sergeant Eric Ontiveros, during the awards ceremony, highlighted this significant achievement, praising Wright’s diligence and skill.
“He is a dependable and extremely capable officer,” said Acting Captain Pernell Hanoa. “In my 20 years of law enforcement, I have not seen many officers as dedicated and/or committed to serving his/her community as Officer Wright. He shows up to work each day with a goal and will do his utmost to accomplish what he has set out to do.”
Detective Donovan Kohara of the Area II Criminal Investigation Section echoed these sentiments during the nomination process, emphasizing Wright’s tenacity in locating wanted individuals and his unwavering commitment to the Ka‘ū community.
Police Chief Benjamin Moszkowicz also addressed the gathering, congratulating Officer Wright on his well-deserved recognition. The Chief further announced Wright’s upcoming promotion, effective May 16th, 2025. Officer Wright will be transferring to the Hilo-based Training Section, where he will play a crucial role in training and mentoring future police recruits.
The ceremony concluded with a photo opportunity featuring Sergeant Eric Ontiveros, Officer Paul Wright III, and Acting Captain Pernell Hanoa. The image symbolizes the pride and respect the Ka‘ū Police District holds for its outstanding officers.
