Kona Community Policing Officer Dwayne Sluss Honored with Hāweo Award

Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi – Kona Community Policing Officer Dwayne Sluss has received the prestigious Hāweo Award for his outstanding commitment to community policing and the meaningful partnerships he has fostered in West Hawaiʻi. The award was presented during a ceremony held at the Hawaiʻi County Council Chambers in Kona on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Officer Sluss, a 14-year veteran of the Hawaiʻi Police Department, has served in the Kona Community Policing Section since 2020. During this time, he has distinguished himself through proactive outreach efforts and innovative problem-solving strategies aimed at improving the well-being of the communities he serves.

His approach to community policing is grounded in proactive engagement, consistently going above and beyond to organize and sustain numerous successful outreach programs. Among his most notable accomplishments is the creation, planning, and coordination of events such as the annual Fill-a-Cruiser food drive and Cocoa with a Cop. Since its inception in 2021, Fill-a-Cruiser alone has collected over 11,301 pounds of food and $18,958 in monetary donations for The Food Basket, Hawaiʻi Island’s food bank.

These events not only bring community members together but also foster positive relationships between the public and law enforcement. Beyond launching new initiatives, Officer Sluss has played a key role in the continued success of flagship programs such as Coffee with a Cop and Shop with a Cop, ensuring their strong community impact year after year.

Described as a natural “people person,” Officer Sluss excels at forming and strengthening relationships. His ability to connect with others makes him a valued resource within the Kona Community Policing Section, particularly in coordinating with external agencies and community partners. His willingness to take the lead in collaborative efforts exemplifies the essence of community policing: fostering trust, communication, and cooperation between law enforcement and the public.

The Hāweo Award, meaning “to glow” or “to be radiant,” is presented monthly to recognize police and fire department personnel who demonstrate exceptional service to the public. The Hawaiʻi Police Department congratulated Officer Sluss for his tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to community engagement.
