For his quick actions in helping to save an injured man, Hawai‘i Police Department Officer Adam Hanes was recognized by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee as the Kona Officer of the Month for July 2021 during a luncheon at Huggo’s in Kailua-Kona on July 7.

Officer Hanes was recognized for his outstanding performance responding to a vehicle accident at the Honokohau Harbor in March.

Officer Hanes, alongside Officer Kelena Kealoha and Officer Chelsey Santos, responded to a call of a motor vehicle collision and found the victim to be unresponsive, not breathing, and suffering from a large wound to the back of his head. Officer Hanes immediately took control of the situation and began to apply chest compressions to the victim, while Officers Kealoha and Santos assisted with rescue breathing, wound pressure application, and stabilizing the victim’s head.

A subsequent investigation found that the victim had been working on his unoccupied vehicle when the truck moved and ran over him. He survived the incident, despite serious injuries, requiring transport to Queens Medical Center on Oahu. In addition to his quick thinking and immediate action, Officer Hanes was further recognized for his consistent level of initiative over the course of his four years with Kona Patrol.

Every month the Kona Crime Prevention Committee honors a police officer in west Hawaii as their Officer of the Month. Officers are nominated by their supervisors from the various police districts and a winner is selected by the KCPC board of directors. KCPC holds a monthly luncheon to honor the officer.

All officers selected for Officer of the Month are eligible to be selected as the Kona Crime Prevention Committee’s Officer of the Year.
