Kona Cyclist Dies After Rear-Ending Tour Bus on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway

Kailua-Kona, HI – A 71-year-old Kailua-Kona man has died following a traffic collision that occurred on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, on Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway (Highway 19) near the 94.5-mile marker in North Kona.

The victim has been identified as Franz Albert-Ludwig Weber.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 9:08 a.m. on April 9th. Weber was riding a black Trek bicycle southbound (Kona bound) on Highway 19 when he rear-ended a green 2015 Motor Coach Industries tour bus. The bus was reportedly stopped on the shoulder of the highway, on the makai (ocean) side.

Weber was initially transported to Kona Community Hospital for treatment before being airlifted to Queens Medical Center on Oahu for further care. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 9:34 a.m., at Queens Medical Center.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation into the incident. Weber’s death marks the 11th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
