Kona Man Held Without Bail on Child Pornography Charges

Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Kona man, 18 year-old Dominic Alexander Roberts, is to be held without bail following a hearing on September 17, 2024 in Kona Circuit Court.

On August 15, 2024, Roberts was charged by Indictment with one count of Promoting Child Abuse in the First Degree, five counts of Promoting Child Abuse in the Second Degree, and two counts of Use of a Computer in Commission of a Separate Crime. The most serious offense, Promoting Child Abuse in the First Degree, is a Class A felony offense which carries a maximum penalty of a twenty-year prison term.

Bail was originally set at $290,000.00. During the hearing, the prosecution presented evidence that Roberts engaged in
dissemination of child sexual abuse material (“CSAM”) across multiple social media platforms. He also utilized cyber-bullying and extortion tactics to solicit CSAM and other harmful content from minors, and then disseminated the content online.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The investigation is being handled by Detective Chandler Nacino, Area II Juvenile Aid Section, Hawai‘i Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Annaliese Wolf.

“Parents and guardians should remain vigilant against the dangers that exist online that can harm our keiki. Children can form relationships with predators online, or be pursued on social media, and ultimately be harmed by someone miles away behind a keyboard. Maintaining awareness of your child’s online activity and having regular discussions with children about how to stay safe online is essential,” said Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen.

The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney remains dedicated to the pursuit of justice with integrity and commitment. Anyone having information to assist local law enforcement should call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
