Kona Teen Charged After Weapons Incident Near Kealakehe High School

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaiʻi – Hawaiʻi Island police have charged 19-year-old Fernando Villanueva-Gonzalez of Kailua-Kona with multiple offenses following a weapons incident reported on Sunday, June 1, 2025, in the vicinity of Puohulihuli Street near Kealakehe High School.

Police responded to the 12:41 a.m. incident to find a crowd of approximately 20 individuals. According to witness accounts, a male suspect brandished a firearm and fired one round into the air during a physical altercation involving multiple people.

Villanueva-Gonzalez was identified as the suspect and arrested at the scene at 1:05 a.m. He was transported to the Kona Police Station, where he was held pending further investigation.

On Monday, June 2, 2025, Fernando Villanueva-Gonzalez was formally charged with offenses including: permit to acquire, possession of loaded firearm on highway, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug, first-degree reckless endangering, place to keep pistols or revolvers, and place to keep ammunition.

Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigation Section are continuing the investigation. Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident, including details about potential accomplices, to contact Detective Aaron Tanaka at (808) 326-4646, ext. 228, or the police department’s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.

Anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300. Tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers is a volunteer-run program that keeps all information confidential and does not record calls or subscribe to caller ID.
