Laupāhoehoe, Hawai’i – The Laupāhoehoe Transfer Station will be temporarily closing its doors on Monday, April 21st, as the County of Hawaiʻi embarks on a significant improvement project aimed at enhancing safety, structural integrity, and user experience. The closure is expected to last up to 10 months, with a projected reopening in early 2026.
The $2.57 million construction contract has been awarded to Isemoto Contracting, who will be implementing a range of upgrades. These include the installation of a new canopy to provide weather protection, complete repaving of the site, and the construction of a new rubbish chute, retaining wall, concrete swale, and concrete pad. The improvements are intended to address existing structural and safety concerns while also streamlining operations for residents.
The last day of operation for the Laupāhoehoe Transfer Station before the commencement of construction will be Sunday, April 20th.

To mitigate the impact of the closure on local residents, the Honomū Transfer Station will be extending its operating hours and adding extra days to its schedule.
Effective April 21st, the Honomū Transfer Station (28-1844 Old Māmalahoa Highway) will operate on the following schedule:
- Monday: Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Tuesday: Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Added Day)
- Wednesday: Closed
- Thursday: Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Friday: Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Added Day)
- Saturday: Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m.
