The County of Hawai‘i Department of Parks & Recreation has announced the closure of Māhukona Beach Park starting Monday, January 6, 2025, for the demolition of the park’s pavilion and restrooms. The closure will remain in effect until further notice. However, Māhukona Wharf, located just north of the park, will stay open to the public during the project.
Demolition Details
The pavilion, believed to have been built in the 1930s, has been off-limits for several years due to safety concerns. Hazardous materials used in its original construction and the wear and tear from decades of use contributed to its deteriorated condition, prompting the demolition.
A reconnaissance-level survey of the historic structure was conducted and approved by the State Historic Preservation Division during the permitting process, ensuring that the project complies with preservation standards.
Park Restoration Plan
Once the demolition is complete, the project will include:
- Removal of outdated camping amenities.
- Decommissioning of the wastewater system associated with the restrooms.
- Restoration of the grounds to align with existing surface grades and characteristics.
Community Collaboration
Mayor Kimo Alameda expressed gratitude to residents for their understanding and support. “We want to thank the community for its cooperation during this closure,” said Mayor Alameda. “We look forward to continuing to collaborate with community members on the future of Māhukona Beach Park.”
For updates on the project and future developments at Māhukona Beach Park, residents are encouraged to monitor announcements from the Department of Parks & Recreation.
