HAKALAU, HAWAIʻI – Customers in the Hakalau area are now under a mandatory 25% water restriction, effective immediately and until further notice. The Hawaiʻi Department of Water Supply (DWS) implemented the measure due to a significant reduction in spring flows and operational issues with a backup well.

The affected areas include properties along Hawaiʻi Belt Road between the 14- and 15.5-mile markers, Māmalahoa Highway (Hwy 19), Chin Chuck Road, Hanamalo Loop, and all associated side roads and lanes within Hakalau, South Hilo.

The DWS states that the 25% water restriction is crucial to preserve water supplies for essential community needs, including drinking, cooking, hygiene, and safety. Customers in the designated areas are urged to immediately cease non-essential water uses such as irrigation, vehicle washing, and other unnecessary activities.

To help meet the community’s critical needs, the DWS is currently hauling water. The department has also indicated that stricter restrictions may be put in place if conditions do not improve.

For inquiries during normal business hours, customers can contact the DWS at (808) 961-8790 or (808) 961-8050. For after-hours emergencies, please call (808) 961-8790. The DWS can also be reached via email at dws@hawaiidws.org. Updates regarding the water restriction will be posted on the DWS website at www.hawaiidws.org.
