Motorcyclist Killed in Hilo Crash Identified

East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit has identified the operator of the 2019 Honda motorcycle involved in the fatal two-vehicle traffic collision in Hilo on Sunday, October 16, 2022, as 45-year-old Ryan Miras of Hilo.

Responding to the collision, which was reported at 4:33 p.m. on Sunday in the area of Kanoelehua Avenue and East Kawili Street in Hilo, Hawai‘i Island police determined that the motorcyclist was traveling south on Kanoelehua when he rear-ended a 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck stopped at a red light at the East Kawili Street intersection. The roadway was dry and the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.

The 32-year-old male driver of the Toyota pickup truck was not injured as a result of this collision.

Speed and the motorcycle operator not wearing a helmet are the two primary factors in the outcome of this collision. Further investigation will be conducted relative to any additional contributing factors.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit continues their investigation as a coroner’s inquest, which remains pending. Officer Clifford Antonio is the lead investigator and can be contacted at (808) 961-2339 or via email at Clifford.Antonio@HawaiiCounty.gov.
