Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen announced that a Mountain View man, 30 year-old Daniel Keith Kia‘i Tavares, was charged with the attempted distribution and possession of methamphetamine and prohibited possession of firearms offenses. Police reports indicate that on March 4, 2023, Tavares was contacted within a vehicle parked on the shoulder of Akolea Road in Hilo. At the time of his arrest, Tavares was also arrested on an unrelated bench warrant.

Tavares is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Hilo District Court on Tuesday afternoon. He remains in custody in lieu of $347,000.00 bail.

Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the First Degree, Attempted Promoting a Dangerous Drug in the First Degree, and Carrying or Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Separate Felony are all class A felony offenses which are punishable by a twenty-year prison term.

The charges are merely allegations, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
