Hawaiʻi Island – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for several districts on Hawaiʻi Island, indicating that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will develop shortly. The affected areas include the Hawaii Island Interior, Kaʻu, North Kohala, and South Kohala.

The warning is in effect due to a combination of strong, gusty trade winds, low relative-humidity, dry fuel, and warm temperatures. These conditions create a high risk of extreme fire behavior, and any fires that develop are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to control.

In response to this elevated fire danger, the following activities are strictly prohibited in the designated districts:

  • All outdoor burning.
  • All outdoor open flames.
  • All “Hot Work,” which includes but is not limited to grinding, welding, flame cutting, or any other fire or spark-producing operations.

The public will be informed as conditions change and the warning is updated or canceled.
